Medical
facility in Denang village, Tibet (Zhejiang Province, China)
Denang
is a village in the Quinghai Province of China, according to Chinese
geography,
in the Golok region of Tibet
. The Tibetan people in this village are in dire need of a most basic
medical
facility. Rinpoche took a group of western people and a few monks to
Denang in
August 2006 where they gathered some detailed information on the cost
of
building a small centre in Denang. At present, there is no doctor and
nothing
to prevent illness, mutilation or untimely deaths. The closest medical
assistance is a three day journey from Denang and only available on a
user pays
basis. Many villagers cannot afford these costs or even die during the
journey.
One of the most common causes of death is childbirth, where the mother
is
unable to discharge the placenta and dies of infections, or has a
hemorrhage
after discharging the placenta and dies on the journey to the hospital.
Over
nineteen years, 79 mature-aged people and 210 children have died within
the
population of 400.

The
first stage of the project is to distribute basic healthcare
information to the
villages and provide a mobile medical van where a doctor and nurse can
visit
the local villages and provide basic medical assistance and health education. In
order to start this first stage, we
require AUS$11,000.
At
the next stage we intend to construct a small medical centre for the
people of
the village in the hope of being able to build a small hospital soon
after. We
urgently need to raise US$15,000 to build the small centre. From this
we hope
to develop it into a small hospital.
Khentrul
Rinpoche feels that this project is of utmost importance as a simple
small
centre and doctor can benefit the well-being of the villagers for years
to
come. The medical facility would also provide basic education for the
Tibetan
people on simple western medicine and possibly traditional Tibetan
medicine.
Simple instructions on detecting the early signs of sickness and other
prevention measures can avoid much suffering in this very isolated
area.
We
are appealing to the charitable hearts of anyone who is able to help on
this
project whether it be monetary help, planning help or volunteer help in
the
province. If a generous donor or organisation
were able to fund this project we would be extremely happy to name it
in their
honor. We also appeal to any medical practitioners who are willing
to
devote their time and skills to such a worthwhile project.
