Kalachakra Retreat
Hall in Chutong Monastery, Tibet
Chutong Monastery in South
East Tibet is home to 500 monks who study the Kalachakra generation
& completion stage practice. The hall that existed previously was
only a very humble room, home and sanctuary to many true practitioners
in the region.
Residing there for a
number of years was Kalachakra lineage holder and master Lama Lobsang
Tinley. Lama never focused on material things, only study and practice,
so no upkeep was ever done on the hall by the monks.
After Lama’s passing
in 1999, the hall kept deteriorating until it was nothing but a pile of
rubble in 2004. The monks who practice at this monastery at the moment
cannot live there and are forced to do very basic study and practice.
They rely on the kindness of nearby families to provide food and
shelter for them so they are able to do minimal practice.
The Kalachakra teaching is one of the most profound and important teachings known to Tibetan Buddhism. We
wish to build a new hall for Chutong monastery so we can cultivate many
extraordinary Kalachakra practitioners and to keep the authentic and
extraordinary practice flourishing in its homeland.
While construction has
commenced on the new hall and about US$80,000 has been spent to date,
we need at least a further US$25.000 to complete the building. We are
hoping to have enough money raised so we can complete the construction
of the hall in 2009 or at least have the needed funds raised by this
time.
